‘Hospital exit but…’: Major update Abhishek Sharma ahead of Pakistan clash

NEW DELHI: India’s game-changing opener Abhishek Sharma may have been discharged from hospital, but uncertainty continues to surround his availability for the crucial T20 World Cup group match against Pakistan in Colombo on February 15.

Abhishek, who has been battling a stomach infection, was hospitalized for a couple of days after suffering from high fever and severe stomach pain.

He was discharged from a Delhi hospital on Wednesday, but as the Indian team trained at the Kotla on Thursday, Abhishek skipped the session as he is still feeling slightly weak.

There has also been some weight loss, and with serious stomach infections, recovery often takes time before a player regains the strength and stamina required for top-level cricket.

Skipper drops hint on availability

“Abhishek isn’t fine still, might take one or two games,” skipper Suryakumar Yadav dropped enough hints that he could be a doubtful starter for the Pakistan clash.

It is learned that his net session in Colombo will be key in assessing his readiness. If he manages to bat for an extended period, as he usually does during routine practice, the team management may consider him fit to play.

Over the past year, Abhishek has been among the most intensive batters during India’s net sessions, often taking multiple turns at the crease.

In a three-hour practice session, he typically bats for anywhere between 75 to 90 minutes.
