How Ajinkya Rahane saved Yashasvi Jaiswal's career

The sidelined Indian batter, Ajinkya Rahane reflected back on the controversial moment when he as the captain took the decision to throw combatant Yashasvi Jaiswal out of the field during the Duleep Trophy 2022 match played between West Zone and South Zone.

Rahane recalled this incident and does not deny that Jaiswal could have taken offense with his decision but rather was candid about what transpired in that domestic game. He even went to the extent of saying that Jaiswal may have overstepped when he tried to abuse the other players. At that time, Rahane’s only concern was the well-being of the player, and he made a tough decision.

“Yes, he might have been distressed with me. While you can sledge another player, there is a line that should not be crossed. I believed that at that time, he had unwittingly gone too far. The situation was such that had I not sent him out, he would have been suspended for the subsequent game,” Rahane said during the interview on Curly Tales’ YouTube channel.

The move that Rahane made was indeed useful for Jaiswal because the match referee had already warned the captain that he was going to impose a four-match suspension on the young player, which could have significantly stifled his growth in the domestic cricket scene.

“I took this decision on the spur of the moment to kick him out of the field and this match referee has informed me that he was going to impose a four-match suspension on Jaiswal. Even the referee did not see such a thing happening, however, because of that, he didn’t impose the suspension. He was simply fined 15-20 percent of his match fees and continued playing the following matches as well,” he said.

Presently, Jaiswal has made it into the national team and he has managed to find his place at the top of the batting order in the Test side. As it turned out, that bold call by Rahane helped the young Jaiswal welcome new challenges in his career and rise up to the international circuit, which of course his fellow Mumbai player has to be thanked for helping Jaiswal play more domestic matches before heading to the national team.
