How badly Manchester United struggled under Eric ten Hag
London London. Manchester United, a record 20-time English champion, is looking for its sixth permanent manager since Alex Ferguson's retirement following the sacking of Eric ten Hag in 2013.
The break for international matches this month provided a chance to assess each Premier League team's start to the season, and it did not go well for United. After seven games, United had gained eight points – the lowest by that stage of the season in the Premier League era (since 1992) and the fewest since gaining seven points from seven games in the 1989–90 season. . At the time, Ten Haag's team was ranked 14th in the 20-team top division. With one win and one loss since then, United remain in 14th place – already 12 points behind first-placed Manchester City.
Last season, Ten Hag led United to their worst finish in the Premier League era – eighth place. United had to return to the bottom-placed 1989–90 season, finishing 13th under Alex Ferguson, a year in which he reportedly came close to losing his job.
It didn't get any better for Ten Hague in Europe. United finished last in their Champions League group last season, even though it included outsiders FC Copenhagen and Galatasaray. United conceded 15 goals in that group, the most they had conceded in a single Champions League group stage. This was also a record for an English club. This season, United have drawn all three of their games in the revamped Europa League against FC Twente, Porto and Fenerbahce – leaving the team 21st in the 36-team league, between Viktoria Plzen and Elfsborg .
