How did a Brahmin boy become ‘Nabi Ahmed’? Surprising story of Ravindra Kaushik
Born in Ganganagar, Rajasthan, Ravindra Kaushik belonged to an ordinary Brahmin family. Seeing his talent and acting skills, he was selected by the Indian Intelligence Agency. After training, he was sent to Pakistan, where he changed his identity and started life under the name of ‘Nabi Ahmed Shakir’ and collected important information for India for years.
Ravindra Kaushik is considered to be India’s first ‘Resident Agent’. That is, they did not go just to gather information, but by staying there permanently, they created a whole new identity, got married, started a family and integrated into the society. This was the first major experiment of India’s intelligence strategy at that time.
According to the family, in films it is shown that spies fight openly or are seen as heroes, whereas in reality the job of a spy is to remain secret. They never attract attention. What is also interesting is that while detectives are usually kept with a simple personality so that they can get lost in the crowd, Ravindra Kaushik was attractive and personable in appearance—which is considered unusual for this profession.
According to his sister, the family was never told that they were being spied on. Officials used to come and go at the house, but no one had any idea of his real identity. Ravindra Kaushik played his role till his last breath and only told the family that he was doing a good job.
His identity was exposed by mistake of another agent and he was arrested in Pakistan. There he was subjected to severe torture in prison for years. He died due to serious diseases and poor conditions.
The family also received information about his death not directly from India, but through an email through a human rights organization of Pakistan in which it was told that ‘Nabi Ahmed Shakir alias Ravindra Kaushik is no more in this world.’
The family alleges that they neither received adequate assistance nor any official consolation after his arrest and death. Clear information regarding his martyrdom was also not given for a long time.
Ravindra Kaushik was also a good artist and was inspired by the spirit of patriotism. He got the opportunity to serve the country through acting and he fulfilled this responsibility with complete devotion and even gave up his real identity.
