How did Arjun Kapoor accept his father’s second marriage?
Bollywood actor Arjun Kapoor’s parents, Boney Kapoor and Mona Shourie separated when he was only 10 years old. Later, his father fell in love with then-famous actress Sridevi and married her.
In a recent interview, Arjun Kapoor opened up about how he coped with this situation at a young age.
Arjun described his parents’ separation as a painful time, saying, “My parents separated when I was 10 years old. At that time, I didn’t realize how much this incident would change me and the course of my life because I was experiencing it in real-time.”
He explained further, saying that even before the separation, his relationship with his father was not ordinary. “For instance, when all of this was happening, my father was busy making two big films.”
Arjun added, “At that time, my father was working on Prem and Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja. He was under immense pressure to complete and release these films, so we never had a typical father-son relationship where he would drop me off or pick me up from school. It’s not that he didn’t try, but our bond wasn’t that close, and then came the separation, which was emotionally challenging for me.”
Arjun also spoke about how his parents’ divorce impacted his studies. “I was a mischievous child but also good at academics. Until fourth grade, I was very interested in studies, but after my parents’ separation, things changed.”
Reflecting on his past, Arjun admitted, “Looking back now, I realize that I couldn’t express my anger or emotions about what was happening. Maybe I lost interest in studies as an act of rebellion. I thought, if people can make their own decisions, so can I. Initially, I loved going to school, but later, I started hating it because people were curious about what was happening in my life.”
He added, “Fortunately, there was no social media back then, so things were less intrusive. I had good friends and family around me, so I didn’t feel isolated.”
Boney Kapoor fell in love with Sridevi while still married to Mona Shourie. The filmmaker divorced his first wife in 1996 and married Sridevi the same year.
Arjun said, “I matured quickly because I didn’t want to lose my bond with my father. I tried to understand and accept the situation. If he was happy with his decision, I was okay with it—even if I wasn’t. I convinced myself at a young age to accept what had happened.”
Meanwhile, after a tough phase in his career, with films like The Lady Killer, Ek Villain Returns and Kuttey underperforming, Arjun Kapoor finally received praise for his performance in Singham Again.
In the film, he played the antagonist alongside Ajay Devgn, Ranveer Singh, Kareena Kapoor, Deepika Padukone, Akshay Kumar and Tiger Shroff.
