Richard Codey dedicated more than five decades to New Jersey politics, spending nearly 50 years in Trenton. He first entered the New Jersey State Assembly in 1974, representing the 26th District until 1982, before going on to serve the 27th District from 1982 until his retirement announcement in 2023. His tenure made him the longest-serving legislator in state history.
Codey served two brief but consequential stints as governor. He became governor in 2004 after the resignation of James McGreeveyfollowing McGreevey’s highly publicised sex and corruption scandal. Codey held the office for 14 months, during a turbulent period for the state, and earned bipartisan respect for his steady leadership.
Earlier, in 2001, Codey also served as acting governor after Christine Todd Whitman stepped down from office.
Retirement and Final Years
In 2023, Richard Codey surprised many by announcing he would not seek re-election, just two months after defeating Senator Nia Gill in a primary contest for his long-held seat. At the time, he was emphatic that his decision was not related to health concerns, stating that he felt fortunate and grateful to be in good health.
