Explainer: What is DME technology? Due to which the problem of LPG will end in India, there will be profit worth billions as well.
DME LPG Blending in India: India is the third largest energy consumer country in the world. But the country imports a large part of its needs from other countries. Along with crude oil, it also includes LPG, CNG and LNG gas. Out of this, 90 percent of the gas reaches different ports of India through Gulf countries and Strait of Hormuz.
India is facing a huge energy crisis due to the Iran-US war and the blockade on the Strait of Hormuz. Meanwhile, a big news came out from CSIR-National Chemical Laboratory of Pune. According to the information, Indian scientists are working on such indigenous technology which will eliminate the shortage of domestic LPG gas in the country in the coming time. The name of this technology is Dimethyl Ether (DME). Let us tell you what this technology is and how it can become an alternative to LPG in India.
How will DME become an alternative to LPG?
According to Dr T Raja, CSIR scientist, Pune, there are many similarities in the use of DME and LPG. According to T Raja, DME can be prepared from resources available in India such as coal, biomass and methanol. If this technology is successful on a large scale, it can significantly reduce India’s fearlessness regarding LPG.
He told that it can be easily mixed with propane and butane and can be used as domestic gas or industrial fuel. He said that in the initial phase the plan is to use a mixture of 20 percent DME and 80 percent LPG. Due to which people will not need to change their existing gas stove or cylinder.
The country will get a profit of 4.04 billion dollars
The report claims that this will help India save foreign exchange worth about 4.04 billion dollars i.e. about Rs 34,200 crore. This discovery of scientists has come to light at a time when the government is taking different measures to reduce the expenditure of foreign exchange. Also, there is huge pressure on the entire world including India regarding LPG.

Auto rickshaw can run through DME
Scientists claimed that DME can not only become a kitchen alternative but can also be used to run LPG-powered auto rickshaws. This means that this new technology of CSIR can not only solve the problem of domestic gas but can also play an important role in eliminating the problems related to transport. The report claims that if India starts blending 20 percent DME in domestic LPG, it can reduce LPG imports by about 63 lakh tonnes every year.
How is DME made?
The process of making DME is very special. It is converted into coal through coal gasification technology. Is converted into synthetic gas. Later this synthetic gas is converted into DME. According to scientists, DME causes less pollution when burned than conventional hydrocarbon fuels. Therefore, the government is also considering it as a clean fuel option.

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has already given its approval for 20 percent DME-LPG blending in India. However, this project is currently in its initial stage in India. Experts believe that if there is clear policy and investment, then great success can be achieved in this sector soon.

China leads in DME production
China leads the world in DME production and alone produces about 90 percent of the global capacity. In such a situation, India is trying to take a big step in increasing the energy self-reliance of the country through this technology. Scientists working in Pune’s lab believe that this is not just a research project but a mission related to the energy security of the country. Which can play an important role in improving the condition and direction of the country in the coming times.
