How exactly does the ‘hydraulic trolley’ system of sugarcane tractors work? Understand in detail

In the rural areas of Maharashtra, especially during the sugarcane season, we always see tractors loaded with heavy weights running on the roads and in the mud of the fields. Technically speaking, it is not just an agricultural tool, but a powerful marvel of automobile and mechanical engineering. A tractor and its hydraulic trolley help a lot in transporting from farm produce to soil, stone, fertilizers, and it also reduces the consumption of manpower.

The main feature of sugarcane tractor is that its engine prioritizes power over speed. The farm has muddy, bumpy and bumpy roads. At such times the tractor’s ‘low-gear high-torque’ mechanism works to pull two to three heavy cane-laden trolleys. The tractor’s gear ratios are designed in such a way that even at low speeds, the engine delivers immense power to the wheels, which can easily pull thousands of kg of sugarcane out of the mud.

Hydraulic trolley system

Emptying a sugarcane trolley attached to the back of a tractor used to be a laborious and manpower-intensive task. But modern hydraulic systems have brought about a revolution in this.

Power take-off: A rotating shaft from the tractor engine is connected to a hydraulic pump.

Hydraulic pressure: When the operator pulls the lever, the pump creates a tremendous pressure on the oil. This high-pressure oil goes into a ‘telescopic hydraulic jack’ mounted under the trolley.

Trolley tilting: This pressure causes the jack to be lifted and tons of cane is emptied into the factory yard in just a few seconds.

Weight-balancing and security challenges

Because of the heavy weight in the rear trolley, there is a great risk of the tractor’s front wheel being lifted into the air as it moves forward. To avoid this danger, heavy iron weights are mounted on the front of the tractor as per automobile design. Due to this ‘weight-balancing’ the tractor keeps a firm grip on the ground and does not overturn.

In short, this hydraulic and mechanical system of the tractor is a true automobile innovation that overcomes the challenges of nature and accelerates the rural economy.
