How important is Seychelles with a population of less than 2 lakh for India? PM Modi said before leaving
Tezzbuzz Desk – Prime Minister Narendra Modi left for a three-day Seychelles tour on Saturday. The visit will run from 27 to 29 June, where he will attend the celebrations of 50 years of independence of the country as the chief guest at the invitation of Dr. Patrick Herminie, President of Seychelles.
In his statement issued before the visit, Prime Minister Modi said that this visit is an opportunity to further deepen the long standing strong relations between India and Seychelles. He said the two countries will continue to work together for the progress of their citizens and peace, security and prosperity in the Indian Ocean region.
Prime Minister Modi expressed enthusiasm about the bilateral talks to be held with President Harmini. He said that after President Harmini’s visit to India in February 2026, this meeting will give a new direction to the relations between the two countries. Modi described Seychelles as an important maritime partner of India and said the two countries share “Vision Ocean” and the priorities of the Global South.
During this visit, Prime Minister Modi will also address the National Assembly of Seychelles. He will be the first Indian Prime Minister to do so, which reflects the depth of democratic relations between the two countries.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs, a contingent of the Indian Armed Forces and two ships of the Indian Navy will also participate in Seychelles’ National Day celebrations. This step signals further strengthening of defense and maritime cooperation between India and Seychelles.
During the visit, important issues like defense cooperation, maritime security, blue economy, digital governance, capacity building and regional security will be discussed between the two countries. Along with this, views will also be exchanged on regional and international issues.
Prime Minister Modi also said that the Indian community settled in Seychelles acts as a strong cultural and humanitarian bridge between the two countries. He is also looking forward to meeting the Indian community during this visit.
India and Seychelles have developed strong relations based on trust, democratic values and mutual respect over the last 50 years. This visit is being considered an important step towards further expanding these relations.
