How is BJP moving forward in Tamil Nadu by taking small parties along with it?
Assembly elections are to be held in Tamil Nadu in the year 2026. The ruling DMK and opposition AIADMK and BJP are making preparations to gain power. While Chief Minister MK Stalin’s party DMK is confident of returning to power once again, BJP along with AIADMK wants to hoist the flag in the state. Apart from this, Congress, Left parties and actor Vijay’s TVK are also in the electoral fray. Amidst all this, BJP seems to be super active in Tamil Nadu. The saffron party is destroying all possibilities in the state. In this connection, BJP is including small parties under the banner of National Democratic Alliance (NDA), due to which the NDA clan is expanding.
The National Democratic Alliance is led by BJP. From national level to state level, BJP continues to strengthen the NDA clan. The latest example of this is the Bihar Assembly elections in November, where BJP contested the elections with a combination of small parties and registered a historic victory. BJP is adopting the same formula in Tamil Nadu also. This is the reason why BJP has made TTV Dhinakaran’s party AMMK the latest joining in Tamil Nadu NDA. Piyush Goyal, in-charge of BJP in Tamil Nadu, recently got Dhinakaran included in NDA. In such a situation, how is BJP moving forward in Tamil Nadu by taking small parties along with it? Let us understand…
BJP weak in Tamil Nadu
Actually, BJP has always been traditionally weak in Tamil Nadu. Dravidian parties like DMK and AIADMK have been dominant in the state. These two parties have been in power in Tamil Nadu for a long time. But, in recent years, BJP has strengthened its position by forming alliances with smaller parties. This strategy is being pursued primarily through electoral alliances, inclusion of caste-based small parties and national level leadership.

Vote share increased with smaller parties
However, BJP formed an alliance with several smaller parties in Tamil Nadu for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. BJP did not get a single seat in this alliance but the party’s vote share increased. With these alliances, BJP’s vote share reached 11.38%, which was an improvement compared to earlier. BJP’s reach at the grassroots level is increasing through alliance with smaller parties. BJP gave 10 seats to Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) in the Lok Sabha elections. This party has a strong hold on the Vanniyar community. Additionally, it entered into seat-sharing agreements with smaller parties such as Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AMMK), India Jannayak Katchi (IJK), Tamilaga Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (TMMK).
This was part of BJP’s strategy to expand its reach by taking advantage of the caste appeal of smaller parties. Small parties are helping BJP establish its foothold in South India. This is why BJP is emphasizing on forming a ‘mega alliance’ by including smaller parties in preparation for the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah has directed Tamil Nadu BJP leaders to include smaller parties and work together with the AIADMK. Shah said that the AIADMK-BJP alliance would win with an overwhelming majority and the BJP would join the government. Let us tell you that AIADMK is in the role of elder brother of BJP in the state.

Who is in the possible alliance of BJP?
The possible alliance could include AIADMK, PMK, TTV Dhinakaran’s AMMK, O Panneerselvam faction, Vijayakanth’s DMDK and other smaller parties. Apart from this, BJP can also include the party which is strong at the district level in NDA. In such a situation, BJP is forming a big alliance by taking small parties together, which can put it in a strong position against DMK. This strategy is part of BJP’s expansionist plan in South India.
