How much liquor and chicken do the people of India dispose of in a year? The data will surprise you
Like all the countries of the world, India too has a considerable number of people fond of alcohol and meat. Even though prohibition is in force in some states, consumption of alcohol is increasing every year. States also get a good amount of revenue from this consumption, due to which many states avoid banning liquor. Meat business is also quite extensive. India comes in the top 5 meat producing countries. Every year, people of India also eat a good amount of meat and also consume alcohol. This year i.e. in 2025 also there was huge consumption of alcohol in India. This consumption is expected to increase further in the last part of the year.
The National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5) shows that more than 70 percent of women and more than 80 percent of men in India eat meat. This percentage has been increasing in the last few years. This number is also different in different states. The easiest option available to meat eaters in India is chicken. After this comes fish, mutton and sea food. How much alcohol did the people of India drink?
ISWR, an organization that conducts research on alcohol, says that alcohol consumption increased by 7 percent from January to June 2025 compared to January to June 2024. ISWR uses 9 liter case to measure the quantity of alcohol. A 9-litre case means 12 bottles of 750 ml each. A total of 44 crore 9-litre cases were consumed in 2025.
Talking about the liquor category, Indian whiskey was consumed the most and 13 crore 9 liter cases were consumed in a year. That means approximately 117 crore liters of whiskey was drunk in a year. Vodka consumption increased by 10 percent, rum by 2 percent and gin and jenever by 3 percent. The ISWR report shows that per capita alcohol consumption in India more than doubled from 2.4 liters in 2005 to 5.7 liters in 2016. It is estimated that by 2030 this consumption will reach 6.7 liters.

According to the report of the Confederation of Indian Alcoholic Beverages (CIABC), 23.18 crore cases of Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) were consumed in the financial year ending March 31, 2025. According to the 9 liter case, this consumption comes to more than 208 crore litres. Apart from IMFL, country liquor is also consumed extensively in India. Mostly only country liquor is available on government contracts.
As a result of this consumption, the liquor business in India will be worth about 60 billion US dollars i.e. about 53 thousand crore rupees. State governments are earning more than Rs 19 thousand crores from liquor. Future Market Insight says that more than 60 percent of India’s population is below 35 years of age, which is why the demand for liquor is increasing rapidly.
How much chicken did the people of India eat?
According to the Basic Animal Husbandry Statistics (BAHS) report, if we compare 2023-24 to 2024-25, it shows that there was an increase of 4.95 percent in meat production in India. Among the states with highest meat production, West Bengal is at number 1, Uttar Pradesh is at number 2 and Maharashtra is at number 3. If we look at the data of 2023-24, it can be understood that poultry meat i.e. chicken has the highest share in meat i.e. 48.96 percent. That means almost half of the people who eat meat in India eat chicken only.

According to BAHS data, more than 10 million tonnes of meat was produced in the year 2024-25. As a result, India, which was at fifth place in meat production, has now reached fourth place. This was 2.46 percent more than last year. Almost half of this i.e. 51.8 lakh tonnes of meat was from chickens and hens. If we look at the state wise, West Bengal is the worst (12.46 percent), Uttar Pradesh (12.20 percent) is at second place and Maharashtra (11.57 percent) is at third place.
