How To Beat Brock With Charmander Fire Red
Beating Brock with Charmander in Pokémon FireRed is one of the first real challenges new players face. If you picked Charmander as your starter, you probably already noticed the problem. Brock is a Rock-type Gym Leader, and Fire-type moves are not very effective against Rock-type Pokémon. On paper, this looks like a bad matchup. In reality, it is absolutely possible to win with the right plan.
Why Brock Is Difficult For Charmander
Brock, the Pewter City Gym Leader, specializes in Rock-type Pokémon. His team includes:
Geodude (Level 12)
Onix (Level 14)
Rock-type Pokémon resist Fire-type attacks. They also usually have high Defense stats, which makes physical attacks weaker against them. To make things harder, Onix knows Rock Tomb, a move that deals solid damage and lowers your Speed.
Charmander starts as a Fire-type Pokémon with low Defense and limited move options early in the game. That combination makes the battle feel unfair at first. However, you can turn the situation around with smart preparation.
Level Up Charmander Properly
The most important step is leveling up before you challenge Brock. Do not rush into the Pewter City Gym at Level 8 or 9. You will struggle.
Train Charmander to at least Level 13 or Level 14 before fighting Brock. At Level 13, Charmander learns Metal Claw. This move is extremely important because:
Metal Claw is a Steel-type move.
Steel-type moves are super effective against Rock-type Pokémon.
It can occasionally raise Charmander’s Attack stat.
Metal Claw is your key to winning this fight. Without it, the battle becomes much harder.
You can train Charmander in the following places:
Battling wild Pokémon repeatedly will give you enough experience to reach the required level.
Use The Right Strategy Against Geodude
When the battle starts, Brock sends out Geodude. Here is how to handle it:
Geodude may use Defense Curl or Tackle. It is not extremely fast, so you should be able to hit first if your level is high enough.
Two or three Metal Claws should defeat Geodude. If your Attack increases due to Metal Claw’s effect, the battle becomes even easier.
Do not waste healing items unless necessary. Save them for Onix, which is the bigger threat.
How To Defeat Onix
Onix looks intimidating because of its size and higher level. However, it has a weakness. While it has high Defense, its Attack stat is not very strong in Pokémon FireRed.
Here is the approach:
Continue using Metal Claw.
Heal with a Potion if your HP drops into the red zone.
Do not panic if Rock Tomb lowers your Speed.
Rock Tomb reduces Speed, but that is not critical if you can survive the hits. The key is staying alive long enough to land enough Metal Claws.
Usually, it takes three to four Metal Claws to knock out Onix, depending on damage rolls and Attack boosts.
Buy Potions Before The Battle
Preparation is everything. Before entering the Gym, visit the Poké Mart in Pewter City. Buy at least:
Potions can save you if Rock Tomb deals more damage than expected. Use them wisely. Heal only when your HP is dangerously low. Timing matters.
Alternative Strategy: Catch A Support Pokémon
If you are still struggling, consider catching another Pokémon to help Charmander. Even though this guide focuses on beating Brock with Charmander, using team support is completely valid.
In Viridian Forest, you can catch:
Mankey is especially useful because it learns Low Kick, which is super effective against Rock-types. You can weaken Brock’s Pokémon with Mankey and finish them off with Charmander if you prefer.
However, if your goal is to win mainly with Charmander, leveling up and using Metal Claw is enough.
Understand Type Matchups
To succeed in Pokémon FireRed, you must understand type advantages. Fire-type moves are strong against Grass, Bug, Ice, and Steel. They are weak against Rock, Water, and Fire.
Steel-type moves, like Metal Claw, are strong against Rock. That is why this move changes everything in this battle.
Learning type matchups early will make future Gyms much easier.
Battle Tips To Increase Your Chances
Keep these tips in mind during the fight:
Save your game before entering the Gym.
Do not use Growl; focus on attacking.
Heal at the right moment, not too early.
Make sure Charmander is not holding unnecessary status conditions.
Small decisions can make a big difference in close battles.
After You Win
Once you defeat Brock, you earn:
The Boulder Badge
TM39 (Rock Tomb)
The Boulder Badge allows you to use the move Flash outside of battle and makes your Pokémon slightly stronger.
Winning this battle proves that even a Fire-type starter can overcome a Rock-type Gym Leader with the right strategy.
