Huge increase of Rs 55 in petrol and diesel prices in Pakistan just before Eid

Eid preparations have been ruined amid the economic crisis in Pakistan. The sharp increase in the prices of petrol and diesel by Rs 55 per liter in the holy month of Ramzan has deepened the troubles of lakhs of families. The common man, already in the grip of inflation, is now burdened with transportation expenses.

In cities like Karachi and Peshawar, fares for buses and rickshaws increased immediately. Due to this, the prices of food items have also started skyrocketing. This shock is proving to be most fatal for daily wage laborers and gig workers, because their earnings are uncertain.

Pakistan’s dependence on imported fuel transmits global fluctuations directly to the domestic market. Reports suggest that this increase is spreading cost pressure across sectors. Hopes of subsidy in Ramadan were dashed, leading to public anger.

Petroleum dealers have recorded a huge decline in sales. Traders in the markets started setting new prices within hours. Eid shopping has been put on hold, due to which the colors of the festival are fading. The government will now have to focus on immediate relief measures.
