Husband quits job to pay 15 lakh rupees in alimony to wife; loses 5 crore rupees
Desk: Alimony has become a major legal issue in divorce or separation cases today. Often, the husband is required to shoulder the responsibility of providing for his wife and children. One such shocking case has come to light, in which a man once earned an annual salary of approximately ₹6 crore (approximately $1.5 million). Following a court order, he will now have to pay approximately ₹5 crore (approximately $1.5 million) to his wife.
This case is from Singapore. The Canadian man was working as a senior executive in the Singapore office of a multinational company. He moved to Singapore with his wife and four children in 2013. His annual income in 2023 was estimated to be over S$860,000, which is approximately Rs 6.13 crore in Indian currency.
According to reports, in August 2023, the man left his wife and children and began living with another woman. He then offered to pay her S$20,000 per month as alimony, or approximately ₹1.55 million (approximately ₹1.55 million). This included house rent, children’s school fees, and transportation expenses. This amount was later reduced to S$11,000 (approximately ₹7.7 million).
The wife, citing this arrangement as inadequate, filed a maintenance application in court under Singapore’s Women’s Charter Act on October 2, 2023. She argued that her husband had not provided her with adequate financial support after abandoning the family.
On October 9, 2023, just days after the maintenance application was filed in court, the husband resigned from his job. In January 2024, he left Singapore and returned to Canada. During this time, the court issued an arrest warrant against him, which was later revoked when he attended a virtual hearing.
In April 2024, the wife filed for divorce. The husband claimed in court that she had tarnished his image, forcing him to leave his job. However, the court rejected this argument.
The court, after hearing the case, ruled that the total maintenance amount from September 2023 to September 2025 amounts to S$788,300. This amount is approximately ₹5 crore (approximately ₹5 crore) in Indian currency. The court also held that the husband deliberately tried to evade alimony by quitting his job. However, the husband had already paid S$154,383 (approximately ₹1 crore). He still has to pay approximately ₹4 crore (approximately ₹4 crore) to his wife.
The husband has filed an appeal against this decision in the higher court. The lump sum payment order has been stayed until the appeal is decided. This means he will not be required to pay the money immediately as ordered by the lower court.
