This problem has been found in 2025 Hyundai Santa Cruz and Hyundai Tucson models. There is a defect in the transmission of these vehicles that allows them to shift out of “Park” mode without pressing the brake pedal. This may cause the vehicle to run off the road and cause an accident, resulting in injury or accident.
Defect estimation
According to NHTSA, this recall covers all 2025 Santa Cruz and Tucson model vehicles. These include 35,500 Tucson and 6,900 Santa Cruz vehicles affected. This problem is estimated to occur in approximately 1% of vehicles.
Santa Cruz: This is a combination of a pickup truck and SUV, with prices starting at $33,000.
NHTSA has clarified that vehicle owners can continue to operate these vehicles. However, it is advised to “use brake while parking”. NHTSA also stated that dealers will fix the problem, and correct the console extension wiring, for free. Letters will be sent to vehicle owners on January 19, 2025.
