‘I am not afraid of death’, Sheikh Hasina announced to return to Bangladesh

Former Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina will return to her country this year. He himself has given this announcement. Sheikh Hasina has taken refuge in an undisclosed location in India since her ouster on August 5, 2024. The interim government led by Mohammad Yunus has raised the demand for Hasina’s extradition several times. The International Criminal Tribunal of Bangladesh had sentenced Hasina to death last year. He was convicted on five counts. In such an environment, everyone is surprised by the announcement of his return.

In an interview to NDTV, Sheikh Hasina said, ‘The decision taken against me is not justice. This is an illegal, unconstitutional and politically motivated process. The judiciary has been made a weapon of political vendetta to make Awami League leaderless. Such an attempt has been made before, failed then and will not succeed in future also.

Many conspiracies were hatched. But breaking every conspiracy, I stood with the people of Bangladesh. With the public vote, I became the Prime Minister 5 times and brought unprecedented development to the country.

In July 2024, students’ movement against reservation broke out in Bangladesh. Later, after the intervention of the government, the matter calmed down, but the matter arose again in the last month of July. This time the students demanded the resignation of Sheikh Hasina. On August 5, the matter became very violent in Dhaka. Amidst the heavy violence, Sheikh Hasina had to flee Bangladesh and take refuge in India.

On August 8, an interim government was formed under the leadership of Mohammad Yunus. Last year, the United Nations estimated in a report that 1,400 people had lost their lives in Bangladesh during the violence. The case against Sheikh Hasina, her ministers and police officers was tried in a special tribunal. On 17 November 2025, the court sentenced Sheikh Hasina and former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal to death. However, both the leaders have taken refuge in India.
