‘I can’t leave India, but I want to go home’: West Indies coach Darren Sammy’s appeal
Sports Sports: West Indies coach Darren Sammy and his team have made a desperate appeal on social media as they wait for permission to return home. West Indies crashed out of the T20 World Cup after losing to India in the Super 8 stage. However, the players have not been able to return home due to international airspace restrictions imposed by the US and Israel following the attacks on Iran. With no clarity as to when the situation will return to normal, the West Indies team is stuck in India right now.
‘I want to go home,’ Sammy posted on X. He is waiting for the green signal to board a flight home from India.
Cricket West Indies is working to resolve this issue
Cricket West Indies said it is working closely with the ICC and relevant government authorities to ensure the safe travel of players. Flight operations in the Gulf region are currently halted and damage has also been reported at Dubai International Airport, one of the world’s busiest airports. “Following their exit from the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, Cricket West Indies (CWI) would like to inform you that the departure of the West Indies senior men’s team from India has been delayed due to international airspace restrictions,” the board said in a statement. “These restrictions are in response to the security threats posed by military actions in the Gulf region. This has impacted many international flight routes and has resulted in airlines suspending scheduled services due to security concerns. CWI appreciates the understanding and concern of our fans, families and partners at this time.”
The team was eliminated from the tournament after losing the Super 8 match against India in Kolkata.
“The West Indies team is still here. There is no confirmation on when they will leave. The ICC is looking into these matters. I don’t think there is any pressure on the West Indies boys to return home,” said a BCCI official, who did not want to be named.
