Real Kashmir, Gokulam Kerala, Inter Kashi look to extend winning start
The 2024-25 I-League season has kicked off with teams such as Gokulam Kerala, Inter Kashi, and Real Kashmir FC securing early victories while the likes of Churchill Brothers, Sreenidi Deccan and Dempo SC are still finding their form as they look to shake off the offseason rust.
This Friday marks the second round of matches, where some teams will be aiming to build on their wins, while others will be looking to overcome their initial struggles.
Gokulam Kerala, who clinched a dramatic 3-2 comeback victory over last season’s runners-up Sreenidi Deccan, will face Real Kashmir FC on Friday.
The Snow Leopards enter the match buoyed by a solid 2-0 win against Rajasthan United FC. The upcoming clash will be a critical test for both teams.
Gokulam Kerala, despite fielding an all-Indian defence that appeared a bit vulnerable in their opening match, will need to stabilise quickly in what promises to be a challenging away game.
The fitness of forward Martin Chaves will be a key factor after he showed signs of discomfort in the previous match.
Meanwhile, Real Kashmir will look to leverage their home advantage but will need to remain cautious against an opponent who showed they can shift gears at will.
Inter Kashi are also poised to strive for a second win when they meet Delhi FC on Sunday.
After a narrow 1-0 victory over I-League newcomers SC Bengaluru, coach Antonio Lopez Habas is expected to demand a more convincing performance.
Delhi FC, who drew their first match against Namdhari FC, will be keen to notch their first win of the season.
On the Goan front, both Dempo SC and Churchill Brothers will be aiming to improve their performances.
Dempo SC managed a goalless draw against a relentless Aizawl FC, thanks to a steadfast defensive effort, though their attacking play lacked incisiveness.
They will be looking to sharpen their offence in their upcoming away match against Shillong Lajong on Saturday evening.
Churchill Brothers, on the other hand, squandered a 2-0 lead to draw 2-2 away in Shillong.
While their offence seemed potent, coach Dimitris Dimitrou will likely focus on tightening their defensive discipline for their next game against Sreenidi Deccan.
The Deccan Warriors, disappointed after their loss against Gokulam Kerala, despite dominating the game, will be keen to address their defensive vulnerabilities and secure a win in what is shaping up to be a pivotal match.
In other matches, Aizawl FC will take on Bengaluru SC, while Namdhari will face off against Rajasthan United, rounding out what promises to be another exciting weekend in the I-League.
