‘I may be killed, but I will still go’, Sheikh Hasina made a big announcement about returning to Bangladesh

Desk. Former Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina has made a big announcement. She has announced that she, along with other exiled Awami League leaders, intends to return to Bangladesh voluntarily around December, even though they face arrest or death if they go to Bangladesh. Sheikh Hasina said this in an interview. Let us tell you that she had gone to India after the student-led rebellion in August 2024, after which her government was removed from Bangladesh and demonstrations were seen at many places.

Sheikh Hasina said she planned to surrender before the judicial courts upon her return to Bangladesh. He further clarified that there have been no talks with the current authorities in Dhaka regarding the scheduled return. Sheikh Hasina said in the interview, “They can arrest me upon my return, they can even kill me. Still, I have to go.”

  • Expressing deep concern over the current situation of his political supporters in his country, he stressed his determination to face consequences in his home country. “My party leaders and workers are facing severe repression. If death comes, I want it to come to my own land, where my parents are buried and where their blood was shed,” she said.

This important statement of Sheikh Hasina comes after the decision of the International Criminal Tribunal of Bangladesh, which sentenced her to death after finding her guilty of crimes against humanity. The allegations were linked to the state’s crackdown on the 2024 student-led protests, which ultimately led to the fall of the Awami League government. The tribunal held him responsible for ordering or failing to stop the deaths of protesters during political unrest.

In the same decision, the tribunal sentenced former interior minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal to death and former Inspector General of Police Chaudhry Abdullah al-Mamun to five years in prison. The judicial body also directed the state to seize the properties of both Sheikh Hasina and Kamal.
