‘I mean no disrespect’: Arvind Sawant apologises over ‘maal’ remarks on Shaina NC

Mumbai: Arvind Sawant, a member of Shiv Sena faction led by Uddhav Thackeray, faced backlash for his derogatory remark about Shaina NC. Sawant had allegedly referred to Shaina as “imported maal,” implying that she is not genuine or authentic, during a statement regarding her political shifts.

Sawant apologised clarifying that he never intended to offend anyone. He said, “For the last one day, an atmosphere has been created that I have insulted a woman, I have never done this in my life. I am being deliberately targeted by giving a different meaning. If my statement has hurt anyone’s feelings then I express regret.” He emphasised the importance of respecting women and said that respect should not be tied to political parties.

FIR against Arvind Sawant

Shaina NC, who has been vocal against Sawant’s comments, condemned his remarks, highlighting that the objectification of women is a serious issue.

She filed a complaint at Nagpada police station, following which an FIR was registered against Sawant under Sections 79 and 356(2) of the Indian Penal Code for outraging the modesty of women. The Election Commission and the Women Commission have also taken cognizance of the situation.

What Shaina NC said

Shaina said, “This is a fight for the respect of women. Objectification of women and outraging their modesty is not a small problem.”

She further added that the incident reveals a troubling mindset that should be challenged.
