Man United transfer news: Ruben Amorim addresses claims Red Devils attacker could leave during January window

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim addresses claims that Antony could leave Old Trafford before the January transfer window closes for business.

Manchester United head coach Reuben Amorim has played down suggestions that Antony could leave Old Trafford before the January transfer window closes for business.

Antony, 24, made a high-profile move to the Red Devils from Ajax in the summer of 2022, but he has struggled to make his mark in English football, only managing 12 goals and five assists in 95 appearances in all competitions.

This season, the Brazilian has only contributed one goal in 13 appearances, while he has only featured for 129 minutes across seven outings in the Premier League during the 2024-25 campaign.

There is currently a host of speculation surrounding Antony’s future, but speaking after Thursday’s Premier League clash with SouthamptonAmorim revealed that he wants to keep hold of the South American.

“Like I said, I want to keep my players. I’m focused on this, these players. I don’t know what is going to happen. This window, we’ll see, but he did a good job today,” Amorim told reporters during his post-match press conference.

Antony was introduced at the interval of the Premier League game with Southampton, and he played a role in the Red Devils turning the fixture around to win 3-1but he missed an absolute sitter when the score was still 1-0 to the Saints.

Real Betis have been credited with an interest in Antony, but it is only thought to be possible that he will leave on loan before the January transfer window closes for business.

Amorim was also asked about Rasmus Hojlund‘s goalscoring troubles, with the Denmark international again finding it difficult to make his mark against the team at the bottom of the division.

The 21-year-old has only scored twice in 16 Premier League appearances this season, with his last goal in England’s top flight coming against Nottingham Forest towards the start of December.

Hojlund’s starting role is now in doubt due to the contribution off the bench of Joshua Zirkzee on Thursday.

“I think it’s a team problem and you can see it. It’s not just from now, it’s from the past. So we clearly have a lack of goals and a lack of threat,” said the Man United head coach.

“When you threaten the opponents, the opponents maybe don’t press you so high. So everything is connected and all the players have moments in this season. I think, when we start this journey together, Rasmus was the player that was always scoring. So he can come back in the next game, we will see, but I think it’s more a team problem than a Rasmus problem.”

Man United will be aiming to make it successive wins in the Premier League for the first time this season when they welcome Brighton & Hove Albion to Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.
