I was ready to do anything to get India a gold medal in the Chess Olympiad: Gukesh

World Championship challenger D Gukesh on Sunday said he does not think about his personal achievements and was ready to do anything to secure India's first gold medal at the Chess Olympiad this time after missing out last time.

Gukesh was the main architect of India's historic victory. The Indian men's team won its first gold medal in this prestigious tournament by defeating Slovenia 3.5-0.5 in the final round. The Indian women's team also performed brilliantly and won the gold medal for the first time in this tournament.

Grandmaster Gukesh told FIDE, the world's apex chess body, “I am feeling very good. Especially since we played well and performed well as a team. We had some close defeats in the past but this time we managed to win. I am very happy right now.”

Gukesh said, “We had a team meeting yesterday. We were already in a celebratory mood. I was very excited. We forced ourselves to focus on the game and came here, did our job and then celebrated.” He said that this time the team was committed not to make any kind of mistake. India won bronze medals in this competition in 2014 and 2022.

Gukesh said, “After what happened last time, we were committed to make the team win. This time I thought it doesn't matter what I am going to do. I will do whatever I have to do to make the team a winner. So I didn't really think much about personal performance. I just wanted the team to win this time.”
