“I was the vice-captain, yet Dhoni had to…” Yuvraj Singh made a sensational revelation on the captaincy controversy.
Sunrisers Hyderabad has handed over command to Ishan Kishan for IPL 2026. In this race, the name of number-1 T20 batsman Abhishek Sharma was leading, but the decision of the franchise surprised the veterans. Abhishek has been with SRH for a long time and is in great form. While talking on this issue, Yuvraj Singh made a revelation which has healed the old wounds of 2007.
When MS Dhoni became captain ‘from nowhere’
In a special conversation with Sports Tak, Yuvraj Singh took the side of Abhishek Sharma and gave the example of the year 2007. He told how at that time he himself, senior players like Harbhajan Singh and Virender Sehwag were involved in the race for captaincy. Yuvraj said, “I was the vice-captain of the team at that time. But suddenly from nowhere MS Dhoni was made the captain, for whatever reasons.”
Yuvi further said that although Dhoni was probably destined to become the captain and he did a great job for the team, but from a player’s point of view it is very disappointing when you are a part of the system for years and suddenly someone else takes the command.
“Injustice happened to Abhishek Sharma”
Yuvraj, who was the mentor of Abhishek Sharma, expressed his disappointment and said that he also loves Ishan Kishan, but Abhishek would have been a better choice for this responsibility. He argued that Abhishek captained Punjab in domestic cricket, led the team to victory and has been giving his life for SRH for the last seven years.
According to Yuvraj, “When a player gives so many years to the same franchise and still does not get leadership, it has a bad effect on his morale. Abhishek scored centuries, played the World Cup and led the team to victory, yet he was ignored.”
Yuvraj’s opinion on SRH team and Ishan Kishan
Yuvraj Singh made a scathing attack not only on the captaincy but also on the Hyderabad team. “I don’t think Hyderabad will win this time because their bowling is very weak. If they win, my words may prove wrong and I have no problem with criticism,” he said.
However, he has advised Abhishek Sharma to forget what happened now and support Ishaan Kishan. Yuvi said that one should use this pain as motivation and work hard on the field. He stressed that a platform like IPL should have been used to teach captaincy to young players.
