“I wasn’t looking to save the follow-on in third Test”: Akash Deep on match-saving partnership with Jasprit Bumrah
When Akash Deep came out to bat, India needed 33 runs to avoid follow-in the third Test against Australia in Brisbane. He scored 31 runs off 44 balls to save India, and the pacer has now revealed the mindset with which he went to the middle on Day 4 of the contest.
Akash spoke to the reporters at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Sunday. He said that there was no intention to save the follow-on, and he was trying to stay in the middle.
“The contribution of 20-30 runs is always important in the lower order. I wanted to contribute and there was no intention of saving the follow-on. I was looking to bat as long as possible. With God’s help, we were able to save the follow-on,” Akash Deep said.
“When you are able to save the match, the team gets into confidence mode. Everyone had fun,” he added.
Virat Kohli and Gautam Gambhir celebrated aggressively after India avoided the follow-on. Akash Deep did not play in the first two games but replaced Harshit Rana in the third game. Akash Deep took three wickets in the contest. He hailed Jasprit Bumrah for helping him out.
“Jassi Bhai was helpful. He kept telling me what was needed to perform. He told me to be discipline and follow what I did in India with the ball.”
