‘I will not leave my chair!’ Suvendu’s big attack on Mamata’s insistence – said, ‘Didi, read the Constitution’
The results of West Bengal Assembly Elections 2026 have shaken the entire country. After being in power for 15 years, Mamata Banerjee’s party TMC has faced a crushing defeat. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee herself has lost the election from Bhawanipur seat, but she has given a statement which has created a constitutional crisis in Bengal. In a press conference on Tuesday, Mamata Banerjee bluntly said, “I have not lost in this election, my votes have been stolen. Therefore, I will not resign from the post of Chief Minister.”
Mamta has also openly accused the Election Commission of irregularities. After his statement, there has been an uproar in the politics of Bengal and BJP has attacked him.
Suvendu Adhikari’s befitting reply: ‘Mamata should read the Constitution’
Veteran BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari, who defeated Mamata Banerjee from Bhawanipur seat by more than 15 thousand votes, has reacted sharply on this. Suvendu said, “What Mamata Banerjee is saying doesn’t matter to me. But she should know that everything in the country is governed by the Constitution and everything is clearly written in the Constitution. I don’t need to say anything more than this.” This statement of Suvendu directly means that Mamata’s stubbornness will not yield to the public’s decision.
Dilip Ghosh’s taunt: BJP’s Chief Minister will be a ‘surprise’
BJP leader Dilip Ghosh has also termed Mamata Banerjee’s attitude as ‘childish action’. He said that it has been Mamata’s nature to behave like this after defeat, but now the ‘game’ is over. When asked about the next Chief Minister, he added to the suspense by saying, “BJP has its own way of choosing the CM. It is always someone you don’t expect, that is, there will be a big ‘surprise factor’.”
If the CM does not resign, what will the Governor do?
Amidst Mamata Banerjee’s insistence, now everyone’s eyes are fixed on Raj Bhavan. The rules are very clear—if a defeated Chief Minister refuses to step down, the Governor has special powers to dismiss him. The Governor first demands formal resignation from the Chief Minister, and if refused he can dissolve the Assembly or remove the Chief Minister from office. If the situation worsens, President’s rule can also be recommended under Article 356.
How will the new government be formed in Bengal?
Under Article 164 of the Constitution, the Governor has the power to appoint a new Chief Minister. The election results have officially come and BJP has an absolute majority. In such a situation, the Governor will invite the leader of the legislative party of the majority party to form the government. Mamata Banerjee may not resign, but constitutionally she can no longer remain the Chief Minister. As soon as the notification of majority is issued, the way will be cleared for the swearing in of the new government.
