‘I will not tolerate misuse of my name’, Gautam Gambhir filed a case in Delhi High Court…

New Delhi: Former India cricketer and two-time ICC white-ball World Cup champion, Gautam Gambhir has moved the Delhi High Court against misuse of his identity. He has filed a civil case in the court, seeking protection of his identity and publicity rights against digital copying, artificial intelligence (AI) based deepfakes and commercial exploitation without permission.

Let us tell you, Gambhir’s team said that since the end of 2025, many fake videos and posts in his name are being spread rapidly on social media, in which he is shown giving statements which he never made. These included a fake video clip of a “resignation announcement” that was viewed more than 29 lakh times. Also, another video featuring him commenting on senior cricketers’ participation in the World Cup was viewed more than 17 lakh times.

Let us tell you, Gambhir said that by misusing his identity, many unknown accounts and e-commerce platforms are defaming him as well as earning financial benefits for themselves. They have filed a lawsuit against 16 defendants, which include social media accounts, e-commerce platforms such as Amazon, Flipkart and platform intermediaries such as Meta, X Corp and Google.

The case has been filed under copyright, trademark and commercial court laws, and the court has been asked to remove these fake accounts and content and ban them in future.

Gambhir said, “This is not just a matter of personal harm, but it is an issue of law and respect, especially in this era of Artificial Intelligence, every public figure has every right to his safety.”

In this lawsuit, Gambhir has demanded a permanent ban on the use of his identity, name, voice and image, so that no one can use them without his consent.
