‘I wouldn’t…’: Ashish Nehra shares a surprising take on Shubman Gill’s poor run in T20Is
NEW DELHI: Subhman Gill’s poor run in T20Is has come under heavy scrutiny, especially after he was dismissed for a golden duck in India’s second T20I against South Africa.
The vice-captain has struggled to convert starts into meaningful scores in the shortest format.

Nehra backs Gill
Ashish Nehra, head coach of Gujarat Titans in the IPL where Gill is captain, defended the batsman amid criticism.
“Look, the player you are talking about, if the IPL was three weeks away, I wouldn’t be worried. You are talking about the T20 format. And there are only two matches played with South Africa. This is our problem. In such a fast-paced format, if we start evaluating players like Gill after two-three matches, it will be difficult,” he said.
Nehra also stressed that India has multiple options in its batting line-up.
“You have options. You can remove Abhishek Sharma and Shubman Gill. You can open with Sai Sudharsan and Ruturaj Gaikwad. If you want to remove them, you can do it with Washington Sundar and Ishan Kishan,” he added.
Numbers tell a different story
Despite Nehra’s support, the numbers highlight Gill’s ongoing struggles. His scores against South Africa now read 0, 8, 4, and 0. In his last 13 T20I innings, he has crossed 30 only three times.
This shows that Gill’s slump is not limited to a couple of matches but reflects a prolonged struggle in the T20I format. The vice-captain will need to find consistency quickly if he is to maintain his place as a key figure in India’s shortest-format setup.
