IAS Success: Dream of becoming a doctor broken, Taruni Pandey became IAS officer after 120 days of preparation
IAS Success Story: Taruni Pandey, who grew up in a middle class family, wanted to become a doctor since childhood. He had also taken admission in MBBS and his second year studies had started. But fate took such a turn that he had to leave his studies midway. After many ups and downs in life, he took the UPSC Civil Services Examination and secured 14th rank in the list of toppers in the very first attempt. His story is an example of struggle, courage and self-confidence.
Born in West Bengal, brought up in Jharkhand
Taruni was born in Chittaranjan, West Bengal, but spent her childhood in Jamtara, Jharkhand. Growing up in a middle-class family with limited resources, Taruni studied in a private school till class 10th. Due to financial constraints, he had to take admission in a government school after 10th. Despite this, she always remained top in studies.
MBBS incomplete, then new start from IGNOU
After 12th, he was selected for MBBS in a medical college in Sikkim. His dream of becoming a doctor seemed to be coming true, but due to sudden ill health in the second year, he had to leave his studies midway and return home.
After this he Indira Gandhi National Open University Completed graduation and postgraduation from (IGNOU). However, till that time he had no idea of the new direction of his life.
The accident of 2016 became the turning point
In the year 2016, a mountain of sorrow fell on the family. Her elder sister’s husband, who Central Reserve Police Force Was Assistant Commandant in (CRPF), martyred in Srinagar. This incident shocked the entire family.
While meeting officials on matters related to her sister’s job, Taruni realized the responsibility and influence of the administrative service. Then he decided to join civil services.
Without coaching, only 120 days preparation
Taruni never took coaching and relied on self-study. This was his first and last attempt due to age limit. He prepared for about 120 days with the help of YouTube videos, notes and books.
In the year 2021 he Union Public Service Commission Gave the UPSC Civil Services Examination and obtained IAS cadre by securing 14th rank in the first attempt.
The day of result declaration became the most memorable moment of his life. After getting the results in the evening, he waited for his mother to return home and then broke the good news to the family at night. The sister had tears in her eyes, the brother could not believe it, the mother was dancing happily and the father cried emotionally.
Taruni captured those moments in her digital memory and even today she considers them her biggest asset.
current position
Presently Taruni Pandey is working as a Group ‘A’ officer in the Indian Communications Finance Service (IP&TAFS) under the Department of Telecommunications, Ministry of Communications, Delhi.
