ICC fine on Arshdeep: 15% match fee deduction for throwing the ball in T20 World Cup 2026 final, will get 1 demerit point
Dubai: Indian fast bowler Arshdeep Singh has been fined 15 percent of his match fee for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct during the T20 World Cup final. The International Cricket Council (ICC) gave this information on Tuesday.
“Arshdeep was found guilty of breaching Article 2.9 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Staff, which relates to throwing a ball (or any other cricket equipment) at or in the direction of a player in an inappropriate and dangerous manner during an international match,” the ICC said in a statement.
Apart from this, one demerit point has also been added to Arshdeep’s disciplinary record, because this is Arshdeep’s first mistake in the last 24 months. The incident happened in the final of the T20 World Cup when Arshdeep blocked Darryl Mitchell’s shot in his own over. When he caught the ball, Mitchell had come two steps ahead of the crease to take a run, so Arshdeep threw the ball towards the wicket. At this very moment the ball hit Mitchell’s pad. It is noteworthy that Arshdeep had immediately apologized after being hit by the ball by Mitchell. After the match was over, he told that he once again met Mitchell and apologized and said that the ball was hit by mistake.
Arshdeep was accused of violating the code of conduct by field umpires Richard Illingworth and Alex Wharf, third umpire Allahuddin Palekar and fourth umpire Adrian Holdstock. Arshdeep accepted the punishment proposed by ICC match referee Andy Pycroft, so an official hearing was not required. The minimum penalty for Level-1 violations is an official reprimand, the maximum penalty is 50 percent of the player’s match fee and one or two demotion points.
When a player receives four or more demerit points within 24 months, they are converted to suspension points and the player is banned. Two suspension points are equivalent to a ban from one Test or two ODIs or two T20 Internationals, whichever is completed first for the player. Degradation points remain in the disciplinary record of the player or player support personnel for 24 months from the date they are applied, after which they are deleted.
