T20 World Cup 2026: The International Cricket Council (ICC) has rejected Bangladesh Cricket Board’s (BCB) request to shift the T20 World Cup 2026 matches from India. This decision was taken in an emergency board meeting on Wednesday, in which all the members were present. All but two of the 12 board members voted against making any changes to the T20 World Cup schedule, and sources said the BCB has been informed that it has 24 hours to convey its final decision to the ICC. If Bangladesh sticks to its stand of not going to India for this competition, then Scotland can take its place.
BCB had cited ‘security concerns’
Following IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders’ decision to release Bangladesh fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman on BCCI’s advice, the BCB had requested the ICC to shift their World Cup matches from India to Sri Lanka citing ‘security concerns’. Since then, BCB and ICC held several meetings, but Bangladesh Cricket Board stuck to its stand of not playing its matches in India.
ICC rejected all suggestions of BCB
The BCB had also suggested an arrangement in which they would swap matches with Ireland and, being part of Group B in the competition, they would play all their group stage matches in Sri Lanka. However, this suggestion was rejected by the ICC and this latest decision of the global cricket governing body means that there will be no change in the original schedule of the T20 World Cup.
ICC gave 24 hours ultimatum to BCB
ICC has informed BCB about its decision and Bangladesh Cricket Board has 24 hours to respond to this decision. Although Bangladesh has stuck to its stand so far, but deciding not to go to India will mean that they will not be a part of the T20 World Cup 2026.
Although Scotland is a possible team to replace Bangladesh, media reports have claimed that Cricket Scotland has not held any official talks with the ICC on this matter. In 2009, Zimbabwe withdrew from the T20 World Cup in England due to political reasons and was replaced by Scotland.
