ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026: Dropping a catch may prove costly! Before Super-8, coach Morne Morkel told the weakness of Team India

Team India’s fielding remains a matter of concern in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. Under the captaincy of Suryakumar Yadav, India made it to the Super-8 by winning all the group stage matches, but during this period the team dropped a total of 9 catches, which has raised questions on the team’s preparations.

Indian team’s bowling coach Morne Morkel has also admitted that the team needs to seriously work on this weakness. In the press conference before the important match against South Africa in Super-8, Morkel clearly said that poor fielding can prove costly in big matches.

He said,

This is a correct question. We need to work the most on fielding. With good fielding we can stop extra runs and save boundaries. Catching will play a very important role in the final stages of the tournament. No catch is easy and all the players are working hard on it.”

The course of the match can change under pressure

Morkel also admitted that taking difficult catches in pressure-packed matches can turn the tide of the match. A brilliant catch can spoil the momentum of the opposing team and completely change the course of the match. After the group stage, India is at second place in terms of dropping the most number of catches. Only Ireland has dropped more 10 catches than India. In such a situation, it is very important for the team to improve its fielding in an important stage like Super-8.

Super-8 big challenge in

India will play its first Super-8 match against South Africa on 22 February. This match will be held at the prestigious Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Now every small mistake can prove costly for Team India, which has reached the decisive stage of the tournament. If India has to remain in the title race, then improving fielding will be its biggest priority.
