ICC Sets Exact Margin for Pakistan to Qualify for T20 World Cup Semifinal
The T20 World Cup 2026 day marks an important milestone for Pakistan. The Super 8 stage has not yet delivered good results for Salman Ali Agha and his team who must now achieve victory to reach the T20 World Cup semi-finals. England provided a critical advantage to the Pakistan cricket team when they defeated New Zealand on Friday which created an open competition for the semi-final spots. The match between Pakistan and Sri Lanka today at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium Pallekele will determine Pakistan’s future in the tournament. England secured their spot in the T20 World Cup semi-finals after winning all their Super 8 Group 2 matches. The second position will be determined between New Zealand and Pakistan.
Pakistan lost to England in their second Super 8 match while their first match against New Zealand was washed out.
Current T20 World Cup Super 8 – Group 2 Points Table
- England – 6 points, 3 matches, NRR +1.096
- New Zealand – 3 points, 3 matches, NRR +1.390
- Pakistan – 1 point, 2 matches, NRR -0.461
- Sri Lanka – 0 points, 2 matches, NRR -2.800
Pakistan trails New Zealand because they have fewer points and their Net Run Rate is lower. Pakistan requires both a victory against Sri Lanka and a significant win margin to move past New Zealand in the standings.
According to the ICC: “To overtake New Zealand on Net Run Rate, they’ll need to beat Dasun Shanaka’s side by more than 65 runs, or chase down a target inside 13 overs, though the figures won’t be exactly known until after the first innings of the match.”
New Zealand lost to England by four wickets which eliminated their chances of reaching the T20 World Cup semi-finals and left Pakistan with one final opportunity to qualify.
New Zealand looked set to join England in the semi-finals when they reduced England to 117/6 in the 17th over while defending 160. But big hits from Will Jacks and Rehan Ahmed took England over the finish line with three balls to spare in a thriller.
“Would have made our lives easier if we won,” New Zealand captain Mitch Santner said. “New Zealand performed well during the match. England deserves recognition because they played well. Jacks and Rehan with the finishing touches – it was a good bit of batting.”
