ICC T20 World Cup: Pakistan completes Super 8 lineup, defeats Namibia in final league match

Pakistan got support from the bowling of spinners Usman Tariq (4-16) and Shadab Khan (3-19) after opener Sahibzada Farhan’s explosive century (100 not out, 58 balls, four sixes, 11 fours) in a ‘do or die’ match in the ICC T20 World Cup here on Wednesday and defeated Namibia by 102 runs, leaving India behind in Group A. Completed the Super 8 lineup by defeating the second-place finisher.

After Farhan’s century, the spinners bowled brilliantly.

Coming to bat first at the Sinhalese Sports Club ground, Pakistan scored a huge score of 199 runs for three wickets with the help of Farhan’s quick century. In reply, the Namibian team collapsed for just 97 runs in 17.3 overs in front of ‘mystery’ spinner Tariq and leg spinner Shadab.

If we look at the batting of ‘Player of the Match’ Farhan, he became the second player of Pakistan to score a century in the T20 World Cup. Earlier in 2014, Ahmed Shahzad had scored a century against Bangladesh in Mirpur.

Farhan has two half-century partnerships with Salman and Shadab.

Farhan, who faced only 20 balls for the second 50 runs of his century, added 67 runs on the third wicket with captain Salman Agha (38 runs, 23 balls, two sixes, three fours), while with an unbroken 81-run partnership on the fourth wicket with Shadab Khan (36 runs, 22 balls, three sixes, one four) he took the team to 199 runs.

Pakistan finished second in Group A with its third win

Ahead of the final Group A league match between India and Netherlands, Pakistan, which had suffered defeat against India last Sunday, ended the first phase in second place with six points with its third win. America finished third with four points while Namibia’s campaign ended with defeat in all four matches.

Pakistan, which registered the biggest win in terms of runs in the T20 World Cup, also ensured its qualification for the next phase of the T20 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand in 2028.

Super 8 program continues, 12 matches will be held between 8 teams in 9 days

As far as Super 8 is concerned, apart from joint hosts India (Group A) and Sri Lanka (Group B), before Pakistan, teams from Zimbabwe (Group B), West Indies and England (Group C) and South Africa and New Zealand (Group D) have already crossed the league stage.

Although a few matches are still to be played in the league stage, the schedule of Super-8 has been released. There will be a total of 12 matches between eight teams in nine days. India, Zimbabwe, West Indies and South Africa have been placed in Group One of Super 8 and Sri Lanka, Pakistan, New Zealand, England have been placed in Group Two.

India’s first match will be against South Africa on 22 February.

The matches of Super 8 round will start from 21st February. Group 1 teams will play their matches in India while Group 2 teams will play in Sri Lanka. On February 21, the first match of Super-8 will be played between New Zealand and Pakistan at R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. The Indian team will play its first match against South Africa on 22 February.

The title match will be played on March 8

In the Super 8 stage, each team will play three other teams in the group. The top two teams from each group will advance to the knockout semi-finals. Teams will start the Super 8 with zero points. No points, wins or net run rates from the first round are carried forward. Semi-final matches will be played on March 4 and 5 while the final will be held on March 8.
