Mumbai23 February. West Indies presented a brilliant overall performance with bat and ball here on Monday night and made a great start to their campaign in the Super 8 stage of the ICC T20 World Cup by defeating Zimbabwe by 107 runs.

Stormy fifties by Hetmyer and Powell, Windies’ second highest score in history

In the Super 8 Group 1 match at the Wankhede Stadium, the Caribbean team, forced to bat first, scored 254 runs for six wickets with the stormy half-centuries of Shimron Hetmyer (85 balls, 34 balls, seven sixes, seven fours) and Rovman Powell (59 runs, 35 balls, four sixes, four fours) and made the second highest score in the history of T20 World Cup.

Zimbabwe limited to 147 runs in front of Gudakesh Moti and Akil Hossain

Chasing a tough target, the Zimbabwe team got trapped in the magic of spin by career best bowling left arm spinners Gudakesh Moti (4-28) and Akil Hossain (3-28) and were all out for 147 runs in 17.4 overs. Matthew Ford also took two wickets for 27 runs. For Zimbabwe, Brad Evans scored the highest 43 runs in 21 balls with five sixes and two fours. Apart from them, only Dion Myers (28) and captain Sikandar Raza (27) could cross the 20-run mark.

Hetmyer and Powell scored 122 runs in 55 balls.

Before this, ‘Player of the Match’ Hetmyer played the best innings of his career by taking advantage of two lives and with a partnership of 122 runs in just 52 balls with Powell for the third wicket, West Indies gave the second highest score in the history of the tournament. This was also the highest score in the current edition. Earlier, Ireland had scored 5-235 against Oman at the SSC Cricket Ground in Colombo on 14 February during the group stage.

Sherfane Rutherford also played a brilliant inning of 31 not out off 13 balls with two sixes and three fours. For Zimbabwe, Richard Ngarwa and Blessing Muzarabani took two wickets each for 47 and 42 runs respectively. Raza gave away 52 runs in three overs.

Evans broke the previous record of most 30 sixes in T20 World Cup.

Although the Zimbabwean team lost, its batsman Brad Evans definitely made a record in his name. In fact, Evans broke the previous record of 30 sixes for the most number of sixes in a T20 World Cup match with two sixes on Holder and three sixes on Joseph.
