ICC T20 World Cup: Zimbabwe enter Super 8 after rain washout against Ireland, Australia knocked out

NEW DELHI: Zimbabwe national cricket team on Tuesday booked their place in the Super 8 stage of the T20 World Cup after their crucial Group B match against Ireland cricket team was washed out due to persistent rain.

The result also knocked former champions Australia national cricket team and Ireland out of the tournament.

Both sides were awarded one point each. The shared points took Zimbabwe to five, which was enough to seal a Super 8 berth. They will now face India national cricket team in their opening Super 8 match on February 26 in Chennai.

Zimbabwe became the seventh team to qualify for the Super 8s and completed Group G1, which also features India, South Africa national cricket team and West Indies cricket team.

Rain ends Australia hopes at Pallekele

Zimbabwe will play their final group game against co hosts Sri Lanka national cricket team on February 19.

With table toppers Sri Lanka already through with six points, the match carried huge significance for Zimbabwe and Ireland, who came into the contest with four and two points respectively.

Australia were also on two points after defeats to Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka. The former champions needed Zimbabwe to lose both their remaining games to stay alive in the Super 8 race, but steady rain ended those hopes.

The toss at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium was first delayed by drizzle, and the ground stayed under covers for a long time. Continuous showers and a damp outfield meant no play was possible, officially confirming Zimbabwe’s progression to the Super 8 stage of the T20 World Cup.
