Ice Bag Incident Lands Tim David in Trouble, IPL 2027 Opener Ban Confirmed

The RCB batter Tim David has been suspended from the opening game of the IPL 2027 after being handed a one-match ban following the ice bag incident during the 2026 finals against the Gujarat Titans at Narendra Modi Stadium.

It is understood that David has breached the Code of Conduct during RCB’s title run in the 2026 season. According to Article 2.9, throwing a ball (any other item of cricket equipment) at or near a player, Team Official, Umpire, Match Referee or any other third person in an inappropriate and/or dangerous manner during a Match.”

The incident occurred during the 10th over of the Gujarat Titans’ innings, following the fall of a wicket, when he threw an ice bag aggressively in the direction of umpire Nitin Menon.

Tim David admitted to the offence and accepted the sanction imposed by Match Referee Javagal Srinath.

While the immediate penalty was a fine and two demerit points, the breach carried greater consequences because it was Tim David’s level 1 offence of the season. He had earlier received one demerit point in Match 20 and another in Match 54.

The recent offence took his tally to five demerit points for the season, triggering an automatic one-match suspension under the IPL’s disciplinary regulations.

Hence, Tim David will be missing Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s first game of the IPL 2027 season. If he is set to represent another franchise next season, the suspension will instead be served during the team’s opening fixture.

The fine comes at the end of the successful campaign for Royal Challengers Bengaluru, who claimed their second title by defeating the Gujarat Titans in the finals. However, the title celebrations have been hit with disciplinary action against one of the key batters, as Tim David is set to begin his next IPL season with one match ban.
