ICMR's new protocol will help in controlling antibiotic-resistant infections
The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has issued new protocols for antibiotic testing for path lab companies. The purpose of these protocols is to accurately identify the level of infection and its lethality, as until now there were no clear guidelines regarding the strength and danger of infection. The new protocol states that the verification process must be done at at least two different locations, and the type of sample must also be mentioned.
“Samples such as blood or cerebrospinal fluid are more valuable than samples isolated from urine or sputum,” ICMR said in a document. This process will increase the reliability of the test and help doctors treat patients appropriately.
Purpose of the new protocol
This new protocol has been prepared on the advice of the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO), and is aimed at helping scientists and testing companies who prepare medical tests. The new protocol will outline what kind of information and evidence must be gathered before a test can be validated.
This new protocol will also help in combating antibiotic-resistant (AMR) infections. AMR occurs when bacteria, viruses, fungi or parasites no longer respond to medicines, making it difficult for doctors to treat and causing diseases to spread rapidly. With the new protocol, patients will have more confidence in medical tests, and on this basis they can be treated properly.
Guidelines issued by ICMR
Last year, ICMR had issued instructions not to use antibiotics in mild fever and pain. Also, doctors were advised to keep the course timeline in mind while using these medicines. In these guidelines, it has been told where the use of antibiotics is right and where it is wrong.
What is antibiotic?
Antibiotics are given when the body's white cells are unable to destroy the bacteria. This kills the bacteria gradually. But often people start taking antibiotics even in case of cold, cough, mild fever and pain. Many times people ask for antibiotics from chemists without doctor's advice, which can be dangerous for their health. If there is no major problem in the body, antibiotics can also spoil the health.
