If a shop demands I put my shoes outside, I’m leaving

Having run into plenty of fashion shops and other stores in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City that insist customers leave their shoes outside, I tend to refuse immediately.

I find this kind of shopping experience uncomfortable because shoes are part of my outfit. Not everyone goes out wearing slip-on sandals or flip-flops.

Not to mention that many people would understandably feel uneasy leaving shoes worth millions of dong (VND1 million = US$38.06) outside a shop. There are also many other valid reasons for not wanting to take off your shoes when shopping.

Shop owners may want to keep their premises clean, but have they considered customer preferences and how this can affect their revenues?

Of course, businesses are allowed to set their own rules. But I will choose to walk away when I feel that customers are not being treated as they deserve.
