If Congress had not distributed Vande Mataram as part of its appeasement policy, the country would not have been divided: Amit Shah

New Delhi. A discussion is being held in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday on the occasion of completion of 150 years of Vande Mataram. The discussion was initiated by Union Home Minister Amit Shah. In his address, he said that this immortal work awakens the feeling of dedication, devotion and duty towards Mother India. Therefore, those who do not understand why Vande Mataram is being discussed today, I think they need to understand their understanding afresh.

He said, we are all fortunate to be witnessing this historic moment as well as taking part in it. When Vande Mataram is being discussed in this great House, yesterday some members raised a question in the Lok Sabha as to what is the need to discuss Vande Mataram. The need for discussion on Vande Mataram, the need for dedication towards Vande Mataram, was there even when Vande Mataram was made, was there during the freedom movement, is there even today and will be there even in 2047 when great India is created.

Amit Shah further said, Vande Mataram… was the slogan to free Mother India from the chains of slavery, it was the slogan for the proclamation of independence, it was the source of inspiration for the freedom struggle and while making the final sacrifice for the martyrs, it became the inspiration to sacrifice for Mother India again by taking birth in India in the next life itself. On November 7, 1875, Bankimchandra Chattopadhyay’s composition Vande Mataram was published for the first time. At the beginning of its composition, some people thought that it was an excellent literary work, but soon this song of Vande Mataram became a symbol of patriotism, sacrifice and national consciousness, which paved the way for the freedom movement.

Also said, Vande Mataram awakened the nation which had forgotten its divine power. Vande Mataram did the work of awakening the soul of the nation. Therefore, Maharishi Aurobindo had said, “Vande Mataram is the mantra of the rebirth of India.” He further said, when the British imposed many restrictions on Vande Mataram, Bankim Babu had written in a letter, I have no objection if all my literature should be washed away in the Ganga. This mantra, Vande Mataram, will live for eternity, it will be a great anthem and will win the hearts of the people and will become the mantra for the reconstruction of India.

The Union Minister further said, today these words of Bankim Babu have come true. Though late, this entire nation is moving forward today by accepting the concept of cultural nationalism. All of us, who are the children of Mother India, believe that this country is not a piece of land, we see it as our mother and also sing devotional songs and this devotional song is Vande Mataram. Many people like me believe that if Congress had not divided Vande Mataram as part of its appeasement policy, the country would not have been divided, the country would have been complete today.

Also said, this is the 150th year of Vande Mataram. The important year of every great creation, every great event is celebrated in our country. So this is the 150th year of Vande Mataram. Now we look back… When 50 years of Vande Mataram were completed, the country had not become independent, and when the golden jubilee of Vande Mataram happened, Jawaharlal Nehru divided Vande Mataram into two parts and limited it to two parts and from there appeasement started and this appeasement became the basis of partition of the country.

He further said, I was seeing yesterday that many Congress members were considering the discussion of Vande Mataram as a political gimmick or a weapon to divert attention from the issues. We are not afraid to discuss issues. We do not boycott the Parliament. If Parliament is not boycotted and Parliament is allowed to function, then all issues will be discussed. We are not afraid and we have nothing to hide. Whatever the issue, we are ready to discuss.
