‘If Dhoni wasn’t…’: Amit Mishra drops big MS Dhoni revelation

NEW DELHI: Former Indian spinner Amit Mishra has opened up on MS Dhoni during a recent podcast, addressing long held perceptions about his career and the belief that Dhoni often preferred other spinners over him during his time as India captain.

Mishra dismissed the idea that Dhoni’s presence limited his opportunities, suggesting things could have turned out very differently.

“People said that if Dhoni hadn’t been there, your career would have been better. Who knows, if Dhoni hadn’t been there, I might not have even been in the team,” he said.

He also made it clear that he never felt ignored by Dhoni when selected, stressing that the former captain always offered guidance and support.

“The idea that Dhoni consistently preferred other spin options never left him feeling ignored. I did have the support,” Mishra said. “Whenever I was in the XI, it was never like Dhoni did not come to me and give me tips or tell me things.

Recalling one of his final international memories, Mishra spoke about an ODI against New Zealand under Dhoni’s leadership.

“I was playing against New Zealand, which was my last one-day series. Dhoni was the captain,” Mishra recalled. “It was a tight game. We had scored 260-270 runs. I came to bowl and I thought of stopping the flow of runs and not going for wickets.”
