Copies of the bill were distributed among Lok Sabha MPs on Monday. The bill is named as ‘Developing India – Employment and Livelihood Guarantee Mission (Rural) (VB-G RAM G) Bill, 2025’. This has created a political controversy over this bill. The old name mentioned the name of Mahatma Gandhi. But removing the name of Mahatma Gandhi, the scheme has been given a new name. This has created a political controversy.

What does the government say about the new bill?

The new bill introduced by the Ministry of Rural Development says it aims to create a new framework for rural development in line with the national vision of “Developed India 2047”. It also said that the number of working days will be increased from 100 to 125. But with these changes, the Congress party has taken an aggressive stance as the name has also been changed.

The Congress party has opposed the government’s decision. Party MP from Wayanad Priyanka Gandhi raised a question as to why Mahatma Gandhi’s name is being omitted. Strong attack by Supriya Srinathe

Three days ago, on December 12, there was news that the Union Cabinet was renaming MNREGA as Pujya Bapu Rural Employment Scheme. However, the government notification was not issued yet. Congress spokesperson Supriya Sreenathe attacked the ruling BJP and Prime Minister Modi.

Supriya Srinathe said that Modi ji has an old habit of renaming Congress schemes and making them his own. He has been doing this for 11 years. He claimed that the names of these schemes have only been changed. No new provision has been made.

Why and when was MGNREGA started?

MGNREGA is one of the largest job guarantee programs in the world, which was launched in 2005 by the Ministry of Rural Development. Initially known as the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, 2005, the Act provides guaranteed employment of at least 100 days to every household in every financial year. It also provides unemployment allowance to those who do not find work within 15 days.
