If teachers don’t pass TET, will they lose their jobs? The central government said something
TET Exam : An important update is coming for teachers across the country in connection with Maharashtra. Central Government has given important information about TET. On November 2025, the Supreme Court gave an important verdict regarding TET.
This decision has created an atmosphere of uneasiness among lakhs of working teachers in government and aided schools across the country. In this background, the school education department of the Union Ministry of Education has sent a letter to the education departments of all the states and union territories explaining the detailed information, terms and possible consequences of this court decision.
This result is particularly directly relevant to teachers who were appointed before the Right to Education (RTE) Act came into force and are currently in service.
Also candidates for new appointments and teachers who are expected to be appointed through promotion have also been made mandatory to pass the TET exam.
According to the court’s decision, from September 1, 2025, teachers with less than five years of service remaining will be able to continue in service till retirement without passing TATE.
However, they will need to clear the TET exam to avail the promotion. On the other hand, teachers who have more than five years of service remaining and who were appointed before the RTE Act, have been mandated to clear the TATE exam within two years from the date of this result.
Due to this decision, there is a picture of increased mental stress on senior and experienced teachers. Many teachers unions have submitted representations to the central government against this condition. It has been claimed that the TATE exam is unfair and emotionally distressing for teachers in the final stages of their careers. Also, there is a fear of creating a serious vacuum in the education system if a large number of teachers retire prematurely.
Meanwhile, teachers who do not pass the TATE exam within a certain period may face compulsory retirement. However, the court has clarified that all due retirement benefits will be given to such teachers.
To understand the real impact of this result, the Union Education Ministry has directed the states to determine the exact number of affected teachers. It has been asked to collect the information in a certain form and submit it with verification. It has also been suggested that the states should send their views to the central government regarding the difficulties caused by this decision and the possible measures to provide relief to the teachers.
