‘If there is so much tariff love…’, Indian-origin lawyer slams Trump for raising tariffs despite ‘supreme’ push

President of the United States Donald Trump is stubborn despite the shock in the US Supreme Court. He increased the ‘temporary duty’ from 10 percent to 15 percent within 24 hours. After this action of Trump, the Indian-origin lawyer Neil Katyal compared the US President.

He wrote in his X-Handle, ‘It is difficult for the President of the United States to rely on the 15 percent tariff law – Section 122. Because, the US Department of Justice has given a different argument in the court on the same issue. The emergency that Trump has mentioned is mainly about the trade deficit. But the US Department of Justice has argued in court that Section 122 does not apply clearly here. Because, this law mainly applies to different economic problems like balance of payments deficit. According to them, trade deficit and balance of payments deficit are conceptually different. Then he wrote, ‘If the US president is so tax-loving, he should go to the US Congress. If his tariffs are such a good idea, he should have no problem convincing the US Congress. Trump must obey the Constitution.’

Incidentally, on Friday, the US Supreme Court dismissed Trump’s imposed trade tariffs as illegal. A nine-judge bench led by Chief Justice John Roberts reviewed Trump’s tariffs. If the vote is taken, the result is 6-3. That is, more votes are against the customs policy. The Chief Justice then said, “The President does not have the power to impose huge tariffs on imports in a single decision without the consent of the US Congress on the grounds of emergency.” What he has done is misused his power.”
