Maharashtra: Nowadays, abusive language is becoming common for people. People are slowly making abuse their habit. In such a situation, a village named Kolgaon located in Ahilyanagar district of Maharashtra has taken a unique step to respect women. Here, now a fine of Rs 500 will be imposed for abusing someone’s mother or sister.
The Gram Panchayat has recently passed this rule, which is expected to change the language of debate in the village. As soon as the information came to light, it became a topic of discussion among the people.
Initiative started on Women’s Day
This decision was taken in the special Mahila Gram Sabha held on the occasion of International Women’s Day on March 8. Pooja Jagtap, a member of the self-help group and belonging to an agricultural family, raised this issue. He said that there is talk of respect for women, but abuses against mothers and sisters have become common in everyday conversations.
His suggestion received overwhelming support and after a long discussion in the Gram Sabha, it became a rule. The Sarpanch said that this decision was taken after much deliberation.
Strict conditions to prevent misuse of rules
The Panchayat has set strict conditions to prevent misuse of the rules. The fine will be recovered only if the complainant produces digital evidence such as audio or video recording. The amount received from the fine will be used for development works in the village, such as installing flex boards to make people aware about respectful language.
