If you have forgotten to renew your driving license, don’t be afraid, you will still get an insurance claim in case of an accident.

News India Live, Digital Desk: In the hustle and bustle of life, we forget the dates of many small and big things. Be it electricity bill or car papers, attention often comes only when a deadline approaches. Something similar happens with the driving license. Many people forget to renew their license on time and there is a fear in their mind that ‘If something untoward happens in the meantime or a small accident happens, will they get car insurance?’ Generally, insurance companies shy away by saying that the driver did not have a valid license at the time of the accident. But now the High Court has given a decision which is no less than a big relief for the common passengers and vehicle owners. That 30 days ‘Suraksha Kavach’ The High Court has made it clear in its recent comment and order that even if a person’s driving license has expired, he is still entitled to an insurance claim for the next 30 days. That is, the 30 days of ‘grace period’ after the license expires, your vehicle’s insurance coverage will not be considered to have ended. Why was this decision taken? The court believes that under the Motor Vehicle Act, 30 days are given to renew the license. During this time, it is legally assumed that the driver knows how to drive and his previous record is correct. In such a situation, the insurance company cannot refuse to pay the claim just because the paperwork is not completed. This is a matter of relief for thousands of people whose hard-earned money was at stake just because of a small mistake. But this does not mean that you should be careless! This is a huge relief to hear, but it is important to understand that this rule is only for those 30 days. If you do not renew the license even after a month has passed and some incident happens, then both the court and the company will not be able to help you. Apart from this, it is also necessary for you to have a valid insurance of the vehicle. It is wise to be cautious. The court’s decision has definitely been taken keeping the human aspect in mind. Still, as a responsible citizen we should keep track of our documents. With the beginning of 2026, you should also check the license kept in your purse. If only a few days have passed since the license expired, then renew it without any panic. And remember, if some force majeure claim arises during that grace period, the insurance company cannot deny you. You can demand your rights legally.
