First ‘Clean-Air Innovation Showcase’ event at IIT Delhi; Chief Minister Rekha Gupta government took a big decision

The government is taking a new and big step to reduce the increasing air pollution in Delhi. The Delhi government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, will organize the first ‘Clean-Air Innovation Showcase’ event at IIT Delhi in the last week of December. The objective of this program is to select new technologies that can clean Delhi’s air quickly and effectively.

Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa said that preliminary investigation of about 300 entries received from across the country has been completed. Now the best teams will be called in batches before an ITEC committee of experts, where they will showcase their models and machines.

Innovators will present their models and technologies in two major categories:

Devices to reduce PM2.5 and PM10 emissions from vehicles (especially BS-IV and older vehicles).

Technologies that clean or capture PM2.5 and PM10 already present in the air.

Each team must demonstrate their prototype, device or machine to prove how their solution will work in real conditions.

Public program will be held in IIT Delhi

This clean-air innovation showcase is housed in a completely open presentation format. This means that common people, students, researchers and government officials will all be able to see live how effective which technology is at cleaning Delhi’s air. The program will run for several days and innovators will showcase their models and solutions in a total of 3-4 rounds.

What did the Environment Minister say?

Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa said, “We want the people of Delhi to see for themselves why the government is choosing which technology.” This initiative is a big step towards transparency. The ITEC Committee of Experts will evaluate the technologies on the following grounds:

Utility in Delhi conditions

Cost and Maintenance

Adherence to legal standards

Large scale applicability

Field trials will be conducted for eligible technologies.

Eligible technologies will be sent for field trials and lab testing, and the cost of the same will be borne by DPCC. Models that already have strong test reports can be sent straight to final review.

The government will provide incentives to the winners in two phases:

Rs 5 lakh – after successful field trial

Rs 50 lakh – If approved for large scale implementation

Innovation Challenge part of clean air strategy

According to the government, this innovation challenge is part of Delhi’s long-term clean-air strategy. Every year in winter, the air in the capital becomes very bad due to stubble, dust, vehicle smoke and weather. In this background, the government wants to create a system with the help of new technologies, which will help in keeping the air clean throughout the year.

Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa said, “Under the leadership of Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, Delhi is preparing to fight pollution throughout the year with scientific methods and public participation.” He appealed to students, start-ups and citizens across the country to reach IIT Delhi and participate in this showcase and strengthen Delhi’s clean air campaign.
