Ilia Malinin opens up about fall after disappointing finish
American competitive figure skater Ilia Malinin just finished eight at the 2026 Milan event for the men’s singles program on Friday, February 13.
Ilia’s disappointing finish came after his Gold win in the Team USA event
The skater, who is a two-time world champion in the sport, opened up about his fall in conversation with reporters after the round.
The 21-year-old skated in the free skating program and failed to complete multiple technical elements. As he was leaving the rink, he was witnessed to be in tears.
Speaking after the event, he said “Honestly, I still haven’t been able to process what just happened. It’s a lot of mixed emotions.”
On how he prepared for the big day he said “Going into this competition, I felt really good. This whole day, I felt very solid, and I just thought that all I needed to do is go out there and trust the process that I’ve always been doing with every competition.”
The skater admitted that before taking the floor, his mind was filled with “negative thoughts”.
