Impeachment motion against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar canceled

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and Rajya Sabha Chairman CP Radhakrishnan on Monday rejected the impeachment motion against Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar. The opposition had raised questions on Gyanesh Kumar regarding the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) across the country and the conduct of the recent assembly elections.

On March 12, 2026, this notice was given by 130 MPs in the Lok Sabha and 63 MPs in the Rajya Sabha. A total of 193 MPs had signed. This was the first time that a proposal to remove the Chief Election Commissioner was brought in Parliament. The notice ran into 10 pages and contained seven allegations.

There were many types of allegations

He was accused of acting in a partisan manner, mass disenfranchisement, mishandling the SIR process in states like Bihar and West Bengal, proven misbehavior and bias towards a particular political party.

Opposition parties alleged that the CEC was running the SIR arbitrarily to help the BJP. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee led sustained protests against the SIR process in her state. Rahul Gandhi also ran a campaign of ‘vote theft’.

What was the decision?

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla refused to accept the notice under Section 3 of the Judges (Inquiry) Act, 1968, a separate notification from the Lok Sabha Secretariat said. Rajya Sabha Chairman CP Radhakrishnan also took a similar decision. Both said that after a thorough review of the notice and considering all aspects carefully, the proposal was not approved.

What did the opposition say?

Reacting to the decision, the TMC Rajya Sabha MP said, ‘BJP is making fun of our great Parliament.’ BJP leaders criticized this effort of the opposition. He said that political parties should focus on the electoral contest and not on targeting the Election Commission.
