25,530 crore central fund approved

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said the main objective of the scheme is to make the country’s ‘public distribution system’ or ration system stronger, modernized and transparent. To achieve this objective, the central government has sanctioned a central fund of Rs.25,530 crore. Three specific changes have been decided to be implemented under this scheme.

Three major changes under the scheme

Assistance to States for Ration Transportation:

Announcing an important decision taken by the Cabinet, the Union Minister said that financial assistance will be provided to the States. For transportation of food grains from godowns to ration shops in respective states, the government will provide financial support to the state level organizations there. This will help reduce transportation costs and ensure timely supply of ration to the poor. Remote and hard-to-reach areas are expected to benefit the most from this measure.

Fair Price Shops:

The government will now also provide assistance to fair price shops. Ashwini Vaishnav mentioned that there was a demand in this regard for a long time. A demand which was not given enough attention earlier and now, ration shopkeepers will get help in the form of digital equipment, improved storage facilities and operational support. This will strengthen the functioning of these shops and reduce irregularities in ration distribution significantly. Moreover, ration shopkeepers are also likely to get financial relief.

The third major change:

The third reform decision approved by the Cabinet deals with the modernization of the ‘Public Distribution System’. The government is gearing up to modernize the ration distribution system and convert the entire process into a technology-based system. The initiative includes automated processes, digital tracking, online monitoring, smart devices and tools to ensure transparency. As a result, this will curb theft and black market and ensure that the direct benefits of the system reach the needy.

It is important to note that the government aims to make systems like ‘One Nation-One Ration Card’ more effective; So that ration distribution across the country becomes more smooth and transparent. It will benefit millions of beneficiaries.
