The central government has extended its flagship scheme ‘PM E-DRIVE’ to promote electric vehicles from March 2026 onwards till 2028. This directly means that you will continue to benefit from government subsidies on electric vehicles.

The Ministry of Heavy Industries has clarified that the subsidy on electric two-wheelers (such as scooters and bikes) has been extended till July 31, 2026; Whereas the subsidy on three-wheelers (such as e-rickshaws and auto-rickshaws) has been extended till March 31, 2028.

Subsidy on electric two-wheelers

The government has extended the subsidy period for electric two-wheelers till July 31, 2026. However, the amount of this subsidy has been reduced as compared to the previous rates. Now you will get subsidy at the rate of Rs 2,500 per kWh (kilowatt-hour). The total subsidy on one vehicle has been capped at Rs 5,000. This benefit is applicable only on electric scooters or bikes whose ex-factory price is less than 1.5 lakhs.

Subsidy on electric three-wheelers

In case of e-rickshaws and e-karts, the government has extended the subsidy period further. Now you can avail the subsidy benefit till 31st March 2028. In this category too, the rate of subsidy has been fixed at Rs 2,500 per kWh. A person purchasing an e-rickshaw or e-kart will be able to save a maximum of Rs. 12,500. However, the ‘ex-factory price’ of this vehicle should not be more than 2.5 lakhs.

More affordable electric scooters: With the subsidy continuing, prices of electric scooters from brands like Ola, Ather and TVS will remain affordable.

Relief for e-rickshaw drivers: Buying an e-rickshaw will now be easier for self-employed individuals.

Charging infrastructure: Under this scheme, not only the vehicles will get subsidy, but also the process of setting up charging stations across the country will be speeded up.
